Over this past year, we, as the WHAPtastic 4, along with the help of our amazing mentor, learned these essential skills that we'll need to defeat the demon and think like a historian. Now we're here to teach it to you!
Here are the 9 simple historical thinking skills that really helped us with defeating this WHAP demon...
1. Analyzing Evidence: Content and Sourcing
--The WHAP demon will be throwing documents on you, telling you to analyze them, and without proper attacks, you won't know what to do.
--Just read through them, carefully, finding out who the author is, their point of view, when it was written, whether it is a primary or secondary source, and the purpose of the written document, and in no time, you will have overcome the demon.
2. Interpretation
-- This ties along with analyzing evidence, in that, it's pretty explanatory by the title. But, it's all about trying to figure out what the document's message is and purpose.
--Does it seem overwhelming? It should. Trust me, though it might in the beginning, our mentor (who is now yours) will make it seem like a piece of cake.
3. Comparison
--He's really testing you now. Not only did you just analyze and interpret them, but now you have to compare them. How are they different? How are they similar? It's up to you to figure that out!
4. Contextualization
--Make sure you know when these things happened, it's vital, not only for getting past the WHAP demon, but also, you know, for life.
5. Synthesis
--Know the time period? Great. Well, there's got to be something in another part or time of the world that was similar to what you have just analyzed. Well here's your chance! You've got to take what you just learned, and make another connection, from a completely different part of the world or time period!
6. Causation
--In the time period of the world (very long) a lot has happened, but why? Knowing the reasons for why major events happen is critical in defeating the WHAP demon. If you know it, you got it!
7. Patterns of Continuity and Change Over Time
--When things happen in the past, some things change afterwards, but still, some still remains the same. It will be your job to figure out what these changes and continuities are!
8. Periodization
--Well, as you learned before, there are six major periods in WHAP. All composed of distinct things. Remembering these distinct things will be your lifesaver.
9. Argumentation
--Are you ready for debates? Are you ready to write an unbelievably amazing thesis for your essays? Well, the time has come! It's your time to shine and show them what you think.
--Yes, this skill does take time to master, but with enough practice and strategies, given by your awesome teacher, the thesis of your essays will seem like the easiest part.
With these 9 skills, you are sure to pass the WHAP demon with flying colors!
